Overview

Costa Rica's misty highland cloud forest — birthplace of the zip-line and home of the resplendent quetzal.

Santa Elena and Monteverde sit at ~1,440m in the Tilarán mountains, where Pacific trade winds collide with the highlands and condense into permanent cloud. The result is a rainforest hung with bromeliads, moss, and orchids, full of birds and butterflies most travellers never see at lower altitudes.

  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve — primary forest with the famous suspension bridges
  • Santa Elena Reserve — quieter, often-misty alternative with great quetzal odds
  • Selvatura & Sky Adventures — hanging bridges and zip-lines through the canopy
  • Curi-Cancha & Hummingbird Gallery — close-up wildlife viewing
  • Resplendent quetzals — best chances March through May (breeding season)

Best time to visit

Year-round — the cloud forest stays misty in every season. January through April is the driest stretch (best for canopy tours and quetzal sightings); May through November is greener and quieter, with heavier mist and cooler nights. Always pack layers and a rain shell.
