Overview

Costa Rica's Caribbean coast — Afro-Caribbean rhythm, reef breaks, and a slower pace.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca sits on the southern Caribbean coast near the Panama border, with cultural roots that feel more Jamaican than Tico — reggae, calypso, jerk-style cooking, English-Creole alongside Spanish. The coastline strings together black-sand and white-sand beaches, palm groves, and Cahuita's offshore reef.

  • Salsa Brava — Costa Rica's heaviest reef wave, December–March
  • Playa Cocles & Punta Uva — softer sand and gentler surf
  • Cahuita National Park — reef snorkelling and easy coastal walking
  • Jaguar Rescue Center — wildlife rehabilitation up close
  • Caribbean food — rice & beans cooked in coconut milk, jerk chicken, patí

Best time to visit

Caribbean weather runs counter to the Pacific — February–March and September–October are the driest stretches. The rest of the year is wetter but warmer-feeling; surf season for Salsa Brava runs December through March.
