Overview

Costa Rica's capital and the country's arrival hub — a working city, not a tourist resort.

San José sits at 1,170m in the Central Valley, ringed by coffee farms and volcanoes. Most travellers pass through it as a launchpad, but the city rewards a day or two: a serious food scene in Barrio Escalante, two excellent museums under the Plaza de la Cultura, and weekend markets full of local crafts and produce.

  • Pre-Columbian Gold Museum — under the Plaza de la Cultura
  • National Theatre — neoclassical 1897 opera house, free lobby tour
  • Barrio Escalante — Costa Rica's best food street, dozens of restaurants
  • Mercado Central — century-old covered market for casado and coffee
  • Day trips — Poás and Irazú volcanoes, La Paz waterfalls, Doka coffee tour

Best time to visit

Year-round — the Central Valley climate stays mild (18–28°C) day to day. December through April is the dry season; May through November brings clear mornings and reliable afternoon showers. A day or two is usually enough before pushing on to the coast or the volcanoes.
