What Is the Bioluminescence Kayak Tour? The bioluminescence kayak tour is a guided nighttime paddle through calm coastal waters where microscopic plankton emit light when disturbed. These organisms, known as dinoflagellates, react to movement. When your paddle enters the water, it creates glowing trails. When fish swim beneath you, their movement sparks flashes of light. The experience feels otherworldly yet completely natural. Unlike daytime ocean tours, this adventure happens entirely after sunset and is focused on experiencing one of nature’s most fascinating marine phenomena. Why Paquera Is Ideal for Bioluminescence Paquera offers some of the most reliable conditions for bioluminescent kayaking in Costa Rica due to: Protected gulf waters Low wave activity Limited artificial light Warm year-round ocean temperatures The sheltered environment allows plankton to accumulate in higher concentrations, increasing the intensity of the glowing effect.
