Some dive sites you visit once. Cano Island diving is the kind you plan an entire trip around. Rising from the Pacific about an hour off Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, this uninhabited island and the biological reserve that surrounds it hold some of the healthiest reef and the biggest fish action on the country's southern coast. The water is warm, the walls and pinnacles drop into deep blue, and the marine life shows up in numbers that make even seasoned divers grin around their regulators.

Your day begins early in Drake Bay with a scenic 35 minute boat ride across open water. Keep your eyes on the horizon, because the crossing to Cano Island is prime territory for spotted dolphins, and from roughly July through November migrating humpback whales often break the surface nearby. Once the captain anchors, you gear up for the first of two dives at separate sites chosen from the six official dive points marked around the island. Each descent runs about 45 minutes, giving you unhurried time to explore.

What makes Cano Island diving so memorable is the sheer density of encounters. Whitetip reef sharks rest in the sand and cruise the rocky ledges. Green and hawksbill sea turtles glide past coral heads. Spotted eagle rays and stingrays patrol the sandy channels, moray eels peer from crevices, and vast schools of jacks, snapper, and grunts swirl in silver clouds that swallow the light. Depending on the season and current you may also drift alongside barracuda, pufferfish, and the occasional passing pelagic, always with a certified divemaster or instructor guiding your group and reading the conditions.

Between the two dives the boat pulls up to the beach on Cano Island itself, where you can stretch out on the sand, top up your surface interval, and use the restroom facilities before rolling back in for round two. After the second dive we cruise to nearby San Josecito Beach, a postcard stretch of jungle backed shoreline, where a fresh picnic lunch is laid out so you can refuel and swap stories before the ride home to Drake Bay.

Here is what your Cano Island diving adventure includes and delivers:

Two guided boat dives at two different sites among the reserve's six official dive points

A certified divemaster or instructor leading every dive and managing safety

Full scuba equipment, so you travel light and dive comfortable

Round trip boat transport and captain from Drake Bay

Marine reserve entrance fees handled for you

A relaxed beach surface interval with restroom access

A fresh picnic lunch on San Josecito Beach

Because Cano Island sits inside a protected reserve, visibility here is often excellent and the ecosystem stays remarkably intact, which is exactly why it consistently ranks among the best diving in Costa Rica. Conditions for Cano Island diving do shift with the seasons, but the reserve produces rewarding dives year round, and our small group format means more attention, better positioning on the reef, and a pace that suits your comfort in the water.

This two tank experience is built for certified divers, whether you earned your Open Water card last month or have hundreds of logged dives behind you. If you are ready to trade another ordinary beach day for reef sharks, turtles, and open water that stretches to the horizon, Cano Island diving from Drake Bay belongs at the top of your list. Spaces on each boat are limited and popular dates fill quickly, so lock in your two tank trip today and get ready to descend into one of the Pacific's great underwater wild places.
