Arenal Itinerary: The Perfect 3–5 Day Adventure Plan

You can feel it before you see it. The air gets heavier. The jungle presses in on both sides of the road. And then, through a break in the clouds, there it is — Arenal Volcano, rising perfectly cone-shaped above a sea of green. This is why you came to Costa Rica.

Arenal is one of the most dramatic destinations in the country, and one of the most versatile. Whether you have 3 days or 5, this itinerary gives you the highlights without the guesswork — and the hidden gems most travelers never find.

Why Arenal Belongs on Your Costa Rica Trip

Arenal isn’t just a volcano. It’s an entire ecosystem built around raw natural energy — geothermal hot springs, rushing rivers, cloud-draped jungle, and one of the country’s richest wildlife corridors. Families, couples, adventure seekers, and slow travelers all find what they’re looking for here.

How to Get to Arenal

La Fortuna (the town at the base of Arenal Volcano) is roughly 3 hours from San José. The drive is scenic but winding — a private shuttle is far more comfortable than navigating it yourself, and it drops you directly at your hotel door.

Toorizta’s private shuttle from SJO to Arenal starts at $180 round-trip for up to 4 passengers. Prices increase by $15 per additional person.

Arenal also connects seamlessly with Monteverde (a popular combo route) and Manuel Antonio, making it easy to build a multi-destination itinerary without backtracking.

The 3-Day Arenal Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive, Breathe, Explore La Fortuna

Your shuttle drops you in La Fortuna mid-afternoon. Check in, get your bearings, and resist the urge to over-schedule today. Walk the town, grab a coffee at a local soda, and get your first full look at the volcano from the main street.

In the evening, head to a thermal hot spring resort. The geothermal pools here are the real deal — naturally heated water surrounded by jungle, often with views of the volcano glowing in the dark. Eco Termales and Baldi are two strong options at different price points.

Day 2: La Fortuna Waterfall + Arenal Hanging Bridges

Start early. The hike down to La Fortuna Waterfall takes about 20–30 minutes one way — 500 steps cut into the jungle hillside, with the roar of the falls getting louder with every switchback. The payoff is a 70-meter cascade dropping into a cold plunge pool. Swim if you can — most people don’t, and it’s unforgettable.

After lunch, head to Arenal Hanging Bridges for a guided walk through primary rainforest. This is one of the best birdwatching spots in the country — toucans, trogons, and hummingbirds are regulars. The suspension bridges swing gently above the canopy. Take your time here.

Evening: back to the hot springs. You’ve earned it.

Day 3: Zip-Lining or White-Water Rafting, Then Depart

Your last morning is the adrenaline window. Choose your adventure:

Zip-lining: Arenal has some of the longest zip-line runs in Costa Rica. Sky Adventures and Arenal Mundo Aventura both run through old-growth forest with volcano views. The Superman cable sends you horizontally at 80+ km/h. It’s as wild as it sounds.

White-water rafting: The Balsa River (Class III) is ideal for families and first-timers. The Toro River (Class IV) is for those who want something wilder. Full-day rafting trips include lunch and river guides — a complete experience.

Afternoon departure back to SJO, or continue to Monteverde for the next leg of your trip.

The 5-Day Arenal Itinerary: Go Deeper

Two extra days in Arenal open up the experiences most tourists miss entirely.

Day 4: Lake Arenal + Kayaking

Lake Arenal is one of the largest lakes in Central America and one of the least visited spots in the region. Kayak the shoreline in the early morning when the water is still and the volcano reflects perfectly in the surface. Windsurfing is also world-class here — Arenal consistently ranks among the top 10 windsurfing destinations globally.

The road around the lake winds through small farming towns, cattle ranches, and patches of dry forest that feel completely different from the jungle around La Fortuna. Rent a car or hire a local driver for the day.

Day 5: Night Wildlife Tour + Final Hot Springs

Costa Rica after dark is a completely different country. Night wildlife tours around Arenal regularly turn up two-toed sloths, caimans along the river, red-eyed tree frogs, Jesus Christ lizards, tarantulas, and more poison dart frogs than you can count. A good local guide makes all the difference — these animals are invisible without trained eyes.

Save your final hot spring soak for tonight. Book a private pool if you can. Soak in geothermal water at 40°C, listen to the jungle, and let the fact that a volcano is glowing 10 kilometers away sink in.

Best Time to Visit Arenal

Dry season (December–April) brings clearer volcano views and more reliable weather for outdoor activities. This is peak season — book accommodations and tours in advance.

Green season (May–November) is when Arenal gets dramatic. The rainforest saturates to an impossible green, the waterfalls run full-force, and the mist swirling around the volcano creates scenes that feel cinematic. Wildlife activity peaks. Crowds thin. Prices drop. If you can handle afternoon rain, green season Arenal is actually spectacular.

Pro tip from Dallas: Arenal mornings are almost always clear. Schedule volcano-view activities before noon.

Where to Stay in Arenal

La Fortuna town gives you the most flexibility — restaurants, tour operators, and transport all within walking distance. For a more secluded experience, several jungle lodges and boutique hotels sit in the hills with unobstructed volcano views and private hot spring access.

We match accommodations to your travel style and budget when building your custom itinerary. Eco-lodges, mid-range boutiques, and full-service jungle resorts are all on the table.

Combine Arenal with Other Destinations

Arenal sits at the geographic heart of Costa Rica, which makes it a natural hub for multi-destination trips. The most popular combinations:
