Top 5 Arenal Tours: The Ones We Actually Book for Ourselves (2026)
The 5 Arenal tours we book for ourselves, not just our clients. Rafting, hanging bridges, Rio Celeste, ATV, and La Fortuna Waterfall with honest takes from Dallas and Marta.
Quick answer: Our top 5 Arenal tours are Balsa River white-water rafting (Dallas’s pick, from $70), Mistico Hanging Bridges ($30 self-guided, $55 guided), Rio Celeste full-day tubing and hike (Marta’s favorite, ~$100), Arenal ATV adventure ($95), and La Fortuna Waterfall ($20 entry). These five cover the full range of what makes Arenal special: adrenaline, wildlife, scenery, and the kind of moments you actually remember.
Arenal has dozens of tours competing for your attention and your morning. Most of them are good. But when we are in La Fortuna on our own time, not working, these are the five we actually do.
We run trips to Arenal almost every week and have tested every major operator and route in the area. This is not a roundup of everything available. It is a short list of what we think delivers the best experience per hour and per dollar, based on doing these tours ourselves and watching hundreds of clients come back from them.
For the full picture of everything Arenal offers, our complete Arenal travel guide covers all 10 top activities, transport, hotels, and day-by-day itineraries.

1. Balsa River White-Water Rafting: Dallas’s Pick
From ~$70/person · Half day · Class II to III (family) or III to IV (advanced)
This is the tour Dallas tells every single client to book. No hesitation. The Balsa River rafting with Arenal Rafting is a must while you are in La Fortuna.
Dallas is good friends with the owner, and it shows in how the operation runs. The guides are bilingual with 10+ years of experience. The gear is well maintained. The safety briefing is thorough without being tedious. And the river itself delivers: 10 kilometers of rapids, roughly 25 in total, with a fruit stop on the riverbank halfway through where they cut fresh pineapple and watermelon while you catch your breath.
The Class II to III section is perfect for families with kids 6 and up. If you want something wilder, the Class III to IV upper section runs the same river but with more continuous rapids and bigger drops. Both options include hotel pickup, lunch, and towels.
Dallas’s tip: Book the morning departure. The river is calmer and the light is better for the photos they take along the way. In green season (May to November), water levels rise and the rapids get more intense. That is when the Balsa is at its best.
Best for: Families, couples, anyone who wants a half-day adventure that earns a cold beer at the hot springs later.
2. Mistico Hanging Bridges: Marta’s Morning Pick
$30 self-guided / ~$55 guided · 2 to 3 hours · Easy to moderate
Marta loves the Mistico Hanging Bridges. Sixteen suspension bridges strung through primary rainforest at the base of Arenal Volcano, ranging from 8 to 98 meters long. The longest ones sway gently above the canopy, and on a clear morning the volcano fills the background.
This is the tour where wildlife sightings are almost guaranteed. We consistently see howler monkeys, coatis, toucans, and hummingbirds here. The trails are well maintained (it is a private reserve, not a government park), and the guided option is worth the extra cost. The naturalist guides know exactly where the sloths are hiding and can identify bird calls most visitors would walk right past.
The full loop takes about 2 hours at a relaxed pace. No special fitness required. Kids, grandparents, and everyone in between can handle it.
Best for: Wildlife lovers, families, photographers, and anyone who wants a peaceful morning in the forest before the afternoon heat.
3. Rio Celeste Full-Day Tubing and Hike: Marta’s Absolute Favorite
From $100/person · Full day (8 hours) · Moderate
If Marta could only do one tour in Costa Rica for the rest of her life, it would be Rio Celeste. This is the place that gives her butterflies in her stomach, and it was one of the first places we went together as a couple. Maybe that is why. But honestly, even without the personal history, Rio Celeste would still make this list.
The river is an unreal shade of turquoise blue, caused by a chemical reaction between volcanic minerals and the water. You hike through Tenorio Volcano National Park to see the waterfall, the dyer’s point where two clear rivers merge and turn blue, and the bubbling hot springs section. The tubing portion takes you floating down the blue river through dense jungle. It is one of those experiences that looks photoshopped in pictures but is even better in person.
Rio Celeste is about a 2-hour drive from La Fortuna, so this is a full-day commitment. Most tour operators include transport, lunch, and park entry. It is absolutely worth the drive.
Marta’s tip: Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends get busy at the waterfall viewpoint and you end up in a queue. Wear proper hiking shoes, not sandals. The trail has muddy sections and root crossings. And bring a dry bag for your phone because you will want photos on the tubing section.
Best for: Couples, nature lovers, anyone who wants the single most photogenic experience in the Arenal region.
4. Arenal ATV Adventure: Our Couples Pick
From ~$95/person · 2 to 3 hours · Moderate to intense
This is the tour we do together when we want to have fun and stop thinking about work. The Arenal ATV adventure is, in our honest opinion, the best ATV tour in Costa Rica.
It hits the right balance of adventure and safety. The trails run through private farmland with volcano views, through streams and mud pits, uphill and downhill sections, and across actual river crossings. It is quite extreme but just enough. You feel the adrenaline without ever feeling reckless. The operators run a tight safety briefing and a test circuit before you hit the real trails, so even first-timers get comfortable quickly.
The river swim stop midway (weather permitting) is a nice break, and the Arenal Volcano backdrop on the farm pastures is stunning.
Dallas’s tip: Wear clothes you do not mind getting muddy. You will get muddy. Old shorts and a t-shirt. Leave the nice gear at the hotel. And if you are a couple, doing the ATV as a pair (one driving, one riding) is more fun than each taking a separate bike.
Best for: Couples, friends, anyone who wants a high-energy activity that does not require all-day commitment.
5. La Fortuna Waterfall: The One Everyone Should Do
$20 entry · 1.5 to 2 hours · 500 steps down (and back up)
La Fortuna Waterfall is the most visited attraction in the Arenal area for a reason. A 70-meter cascade dropping into a cold plunge pool, surrounded by jungle on all sides. The descent is roughly 500 steps carved into the hillside. Going down takes 15 to 20 minutes. Coming back up takes longer and your legs will know it.
The pool at the base is swimmable and cold. Most people stand at the edge and take photos. The ones who get in are the ones who remember it. 100% of entrance fee profits go back to local community projects including schools and road maintenance, so your $20 goes somewhere meaningful.
Best for: Everyone. Go early (before 9 a.m.) or late afternoon (after 3 p.m.) to avoid the biggest crowds. Pair it with a quick breakfast at Soda Viquez and you are at the trailhead by 7:30.
How to Fit These Tours Into Your Arenal Days
Quick answer: With 3 days in Arenal, you can comfortably do 3 to 4 of these five tours plus an evening at the hot springs. Day 1: waterfall + hanging bridges. Day 2: rafting (morning) + hot springs (evening). Day 3: ATV or Rio Celeste (full day). With 5 days, do all five with breathing room.
Timing matters more than most guides acknowledge. Morning tours (rafting, hanging bridges, waterfall) pair well with afternoon hot springs. Full-day tours like Rio Celeste eat the whole day but are worth it. Do not try to stack two half-day tours plus a hot springs visit into one day. You will rush everything and enjoy nothing.

FAQ: Arenal Tours
What is the best tour in Arenal?
It depends on what you are looking for. For adrenaline, Balsa River rafting. For wildlife, Mistico Hanging Bridges. For scenery, Rio Celeste. For a quick thrill, the ATV tour. La Fortuna Waterfall is the one non-negotiable that everyone should do regardless of interests.
How many tours can you do in one day in Arenal?
Two comfortably: a morning activity plus an evening hot springs visit. Some travelers squeeze in three, but rushing between tours takes the enjoyment out of each one. Full-day tours like Rio Celeste take the entire day.
Are Arenal tours safe for families with kids?
Yes. Balsa River Class II to III rafting accepts kids 6 and up. Mistico Hanging Bridges works for all ages. La Fortuna Waterfall requires 500 steps, so very young children may need carrying. The ATV tour and Rio Celeste are better for older kids and teens.
Should I book Arenal tours in advance?
In high season (December to April), yes. Popular tours like Mistico Hanging Bridges and Tabacon hot springs sell out 2 to 3 weeks ahead. In green season, you can often book a day or two before. Rafting and ATV tours are usually available with shorter notice.
Do Arenal tours include hotel pickup?
Most do, for hotels within 5 to 6 km of La Fortuna central park. Arenal Rafting and most ATV operators include pickup. Mistico Hanging Bridges is self-transport or by arranged shuttle. Rio Celeste full-day tours always include transport since it is a 2-hour drive.
