Quick answer: San Jose (SJO) to Manuel Antonio is about 3 hours by private shuttle ($95 one-way for up to 4 passengers, +$15/person over 4). From Arenal/La Fortuna: 4 hours ($110). From Monteverde: 4.5 hours ($160). From Santa Teresa: 5 hours ($190). A rental car works but is not necessary for most trips. Public buses run from San Jose but take 4+ hours with limited schedules. Domestic flights to Quepos take 30 minutes (from $99 per person).

Getting to Manuel Antonio is straightforward compared to most Costa Rica destinations. The roads are paved the entire way from San Jose, the drive is scenic, and the distances are manageable. That said, the transport option you choose affects how your trip starts, and first impressions matter. Arriving stressed from a confusing bus station is a different experience than stepping out of a private shuttle at your hotel.

This guide covers every route and every transport option with current pricing, realistic travel times, and the details we share with every client who books through Toorizta.

Dallas’s tip: If you are arriving on a late flight into SJO, stay one night near the airport and take the shuttle to Manuel Antonio the next morning. Driving 3 hours after a long international flight is not a good start to your trip. We can recommend hotels near SJO and schedule the shuttle for whatever time works the next day.

Route Details: SJO to Manuel Antonio

The drive from San Jose International Airport to Manuel Antonio follows the main Pacific highway (Route 27 / Autopista del Sol) through the Central Valley and down the coast. The road is fully paved, well-maintained, and one of the better highways in Costa Rica. You pass through the agricultural town of Orotina, cross the Tarcoles River bridge (look for crocodiles below), and follow the Pacific coastline south through Jaco and Quepos before reaching the Manuel Antonio hotel zone.

The scenery changes noticeably along the way: highland coffee country gives way to palm plantations and dry tropical lowlands, then the Pacific coast opens up. In clear weather, the final stretch along the coast between Jaco and Quepos is genuinely beautiful.

Traffic through San Jose can add 30 to 45 minutes during rush hour (6 to 8:30 AM, 4 to 7 PM). Departing before 7 AM or after 9 AM avoids the worst of it.

Route Details: Arenal to Manuel Antonio

The drive from Arenal / La Fortuna to Manuel Antonio takes about 4 hours. The route heads south through San Ramon, connects to the Pacific highway, and follows the coast to Quepos. The road is fully paved. The first section from La Fortuna to San Ramon is winding mountain road through beautiful countryside, but not difficult for a professional driver.

This is one of the most common multi-destination connections we book. If you are doing the classic Arenal + Manuel Antonio itinerary (the two most popular destinations in Costa Rica), this is the transfer between them.

Dallas’s tip: Ask your driver to stop at the Tarcoles River bridge on the way. A massive population of American crocodiles congregates below the bridge, and you can see dozens of them from above. It takes 5 minutes and is one of those only-in-Costa-Rica moments.

Route Details: Monteverde to Manuel Antonio

Monteverde to Manuel Antonio takes about 4.5 hours. The route descends from the cloud forest to the Inter-American Highway, then continues south to the Pacific coast. The first 40 minutes out of Monteverde involves the unpaved mountain road that is a known feature of getting to and from the cloud forest. Once you reach the paved highway, the rest of the drive is smooth.

We recommend departing Monteverde by 8 AM to arrive in Manuel Antonio by lunchtime. This gives you a full afternoon at your hotel, with time for a beach visit or a sunset at Playa Espadilla before dinner.

Route Details: Santa Teresa to Manuel Antonio

The longest connection in the Toorizta route network. Santa Teresa to Manuel Antonio takes roughly 5 hours and involves a ferry crossing at Paquera. The shuttle handles everything, including the ferry logistics. The route is: Santa Teresa to Paquera (2 hours, partially unpaved), ferry across the Gulf of Nicoya (1.5 hours), then Puntarenas to Quepos/Manuel Antonio (1.5 hours on paved highway).

The ferry adds a unique element to the journey. You get out of the vehicle, walk onto the deck, and watch the coastline recede as you cross the gulf. It breaks up the travel day nicely.

Rental Car

Quick answer: A rental car works well for the SJO to Manuel Antonio route. The road is fully paved, no 4×4 required. Expect $40 to $80/day plus fuel and insurance. A standard sedan is fine. The main benefit is flexibility for day trips to Dominical, Uvita, or Nauyaca Falls during your stay. The downside: you do not need a car in Manuel Antonio itself (the hotel zone is compact and taxis are cheap).

If your itinerary is purely Manuel Antonio (3 to 4 days at the beach and park), a rental car is unnecessary. Taxis within the Manuel Antonio hotel zone cost $5 to $10, and your shuttle gets you there and back. A rental car makes sense if you plan to explore the wider Central Pacific coast: day trips to Dominical for surfing, Nauyaca Waterfalls, Uvita for whale watching, or Matapalo for empty beaches.

If you do rent a car, book with a reputable agency (Adobe, Vamos, National) and confirm that full insurance is included. Parking in Manuel Antonio is limited near the national park entrance and fills up early in high season.

Shared Shuttle

Shared shuttles run from San Jose to Manuel Antonio daily, typically departing between 7 and 8 AM. Cost is $39 to $55 per person. The trade-offs: fixed schedule, multiple hotel stops for pickups and drop-offs (which adds 45 to 60 minutes), and less personal service. For solo travelers on a budget, shared shuttles are a reasonable option. For couples and families, a private shuttle is almost always worth the upgrade.

Public Bus

Tracopa and other bus companies run direct buses from San Jose (Terminal 7-10, Avenida 5) to Quepos/Manuel Antonio. Departures run several times daily. The ride takes 4 to 4.5 hours. Cost is roughly $8 to $12 per person. Buses are air-conditioned and generally comfortable, but there is no hotel pickup, limited luggage space, and the schedule is fixed. From Quepos bus station, you need a taxi ($5 to $10) to reach most Manuel Antonio hotels.

Domestic Flights

Sansa Airlines operates daily flights from San Jose (SJO) to Quepos (XQP). Flight time is approximately 30 minutes. Fares start around $99 per person one-way but fluctuate with demand and season. From Quepos airport, you need a taxi ($10 to $15) to your hotel. Flights make sense from Liberia or Tortuguero, but for the SJO route specifically, the time saved is minimal once you factor in airport logistics.

Getting Around Manuel Antonio Once You Arrive

The Manuel Antonio hotel zone is a single road running from Quepos to the national park entrance. Most hotels, restaurants, and viewpoints are along this 7 km stretch.

Taxis. Red taxis are available throughout the area. Quepos to the park entrance costs $5 to $10. Hotels can call one for you.

Walking. The road is hilly and not particularly pedestrian-friendly. Walking between hotels and restaurants is possible but involves steep sections.

Colectivos. Small local buses run between Quepos and the park entrance for under $1. Frequent during the day and a cheap way to move along the hill.
