Book La Fortuna to Monteverde Shuttle
Route 1: Private Shuttle (Around the Lake)
The overland route goes south from La Fortuna, around the western end of Lake Arenal, and then up into the Monteverde highlands. The road is fully paved until the final stretch approaching Monteverde and Santa Elena, where unpaved sections begin. These last 20-30 minutes are bumpy but manageable in any vehicle.
The drive passes through small farming communities and offers views of Lake Arenal and the Tilaran mountain range. Your driver picks you up at your hotel in La Fortuna and drops you at your hotel in Monteverde or Santa Elena.
Route 2: Taxi-Boat-Taxi (Across Lake Arenal)
This is the iconic route. A taxi takes you from your La Fortuna hotel to the Arenal Dam boat dock (about 25 minutes). You board a small boat that crosses Lake Arenal (about 30 minutes on the water). On the other side, a second taxi drives you up to Monteverde (about 2 hours on winding mountain roads).
The boat crossing is scenic and fun, especially on clear mornings when you can see Arenal Volcano behind you. The downside is that the second taxi leg on the Monteverde side is long and bumpy, and you are in a shared vehicle with other passengers. Luggage handling can also be chaotic at the boat dock.
Which Route Should You Choose?
Choose the private shuttle if you want comfort, speed, and door-to-door service. Choose the taxi-boat-taxi if you are traveling solo on a budget and want the experience of crossing Lake Arenal by boat. For families with young children or anyone with significant luggage, the private shuttle is the better choice.
The Monteverde Road Situation
The road into Monteverde from any direction includes unpaved sections. This is normal and expected. Our shuttle drivers navigate these roads daily. If you are driving yourself, a vehicle with decent ground clearance is recommended but not strictly required in dry season. In rainy season (May-November), 4×4 is strongly recommended.
