Hanging Bridges Monteverde: Selvatura vs Sky Walk vs Mistico (2026)
Selvatura, Sky Walk, or Mistico? We compare every Monteverde hanging bridge operator by price, forest quality, views, and who each is best for.
Quick answer: Selvatura Park is the best overall package with 8 bridges, wildlife exhibits, and zip-lining in one complex ($30 to $35 bridges only). Sky Walk has the highest single bridge (170 meters long) with dramatic views over the cloud forest canopy ($37). Mistico is the most naturalistic experience, pure hanging bridges and trails with no extras, ideal for wildlife photography ($30). For most first-time visitors, Selvatura delivers the best value. For serious wildlife walkers who want the forest without crowds, Mistico is our top pick.
Monteverde has more hanging bridge options than anywhere else in Costa Rica, and travelers spend more time agonizing over this choice than almost anything else. The three operators are genuinely different in atmosphere and purpose. Here is our honest comparison based on years of guiding clients through all three.

Selvatura Park
Quick answer: Eight suspension bridges spread across 3 km of primary cloud forest, plus a butterfly garden, hummingbird garden, reptile and amphibian exhibit, and a world-class insect collection. Bridges only is $30 to $35. Full package with all exhibits runs $50 to $65. The most complete single-stop nature experience in Monteverde outside the main reserve.
Selvatura is located 6 km from Santa Elena at 1,500 meters elevation, directly adjacent to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve boundary. The bridges range from 60 to 170 meters in length and sit at heights up to 60 meters above the forest floor. The trail connecting them winds through cloud forest that is as good as anything inside the main reserve.
What distinguishes Selvatura is the combined offering. After the bridges, you can walk through the butterfly garden (with over 30 species in enclosed habitats), the hummingbird garden (5 species including the purple-throated mountain-gem), and the Jewels of the Rainforest collection, which is one of the most extensive insect exhibitions in the world. The full package converts a bridge walk into a half-day immersion in cloud forest biology.
The zip-lining at Selvatura is operated separately and is bookable as an add-on. The canopy tour here is good but not the most spectacular in Monteverde. Sky Adventures and 100% Aventura are stronger zip-line operators. Selvatura wins on the bridges and the exhibits combination.
Dallas’s tip: Book the full Selvatura package if you have a half day. The butterfly garden is genuinely one of the better ones in Costa Rica, and the insect collection is unlike anything else in the region. Bridges only is fine for a quick morning visit. Selvatura works for all ages and fitness levels. The trail is well graded and accessible.
Sky Walk
Quick answer: Five bridges across 3 km of cloud forest trail, with the longest single bridge at 170 meters and heights reaching up to 55 meters. The views from the highest bridge are among the best in Monteverde, looking out over the cloud forest canopy toward the Gulf of Nicoya on clear mornings. Price is around $37 for adults. Sky Walk also operates Sky Adventures Monteverde, which is one of the top zip-line operators in the area.
Sky Walk sits at a higher elevation than Selvatura and Mistico, which means more consistent mist and a more dramatic cloud forest atmosphere. On clear mornings, the views from bridge 4 (the highest) extend across the canopy to the Pacific coastline in the far distance. On misty mornings, the same bridge feels suspended in cloud, which is a different kind of spectacular.
Sky Walk has fewer bridges than Selvatura or Mistico (5 vs 8) but the trail quality and forest are excellent. The guided tour adds meaningful context to the wildlife and plant life. Groups tend to be smaller here than at Selvatura, making it a calmer experience on busy days.
The combination option of Sky Walk bridges plus Sky Adventures zip-lining is the most popular package with our clients. You start with a slow, contemplative bridge walk in the morning, then transition to the gondola and zip-line course after lunch. This two-activity day at the same complex is well organized and avoids transport between venues.
Dallas’s tip: Go early morning for the bridges at Sky Walk. Cloud conditions are clearest before 9 AM, and the wildlife on the trail is most active at dawn. If you are pairing with zip-lining, do bridges first and ziplining after 10 AM when the gondola lines are shorter. The 170-meter bridge is the signature moment here.
Mistico Hanging Bridges
Quick answer: Eight bridges across 3.5 km of cloud forest trail. No exhibits, no zip-lining, no add-ons. Just forest, bridges, and wildlife. This is the purest nature-walk experience of the three operators. Particularly good for birdwatching and wildlife photography where controlled group sizes and quiet trail conditions matter. Price around $30 for adults.
Mistico sits at the base of the Arenal Volcano National Park boundary, accessed from the road between La Fortuna and Monteverde, making it a natural stop for travelers transferring between the two destinations. The forest here sits at lower elevation than Selvatura or Sky Walk, which means slightly different plant communities and bird species. Cloud forest transitions to rainforest in sections, increasing amphibian and reptile diversity.
The trail is the longest of the three at 3.5 km and covers more ecological variation. The bridges themselves are well maintained and span dramatic ravines and forest corridors. Visitor numbers are typically lower than Selvatura, which means quieter conditions for wildlife observation. We consistently see more mammal activity here than at the other two operators, likely because of lower foot traffic.
Mistico works best as a guided experience. The guide quality here is excellent and they know exactly where to look for specific species at different times of year. Self-guided visits are possible but you will miss a significant percentage of what the forest has to offer.
Dallas’s tip: Mistico is our recommendation for serious wildlife watchers and photographers. The quieter trails, longer route, and ecological variety make it the best pure forest walk of the three. If you only care about one thing, which is the forest itself, Mistico is where you go. For everything else, Selvatura or Sky Walk depending on whether exhibits or views are more important to you.
Do You Need a Guide?
None of the three operators require a guide. All are navigable independently via well-marked trails. That said, a guide transforms the experience at all three. Bird species identification, plant ecology explanations, and the ability to spot camouflaged animals are guide-dependent skills. We recommend booking a private guide for Selvatura and Sky Walk especially. At Mistico, the in-house guides are excellent and more affordable than bringing your own.
Can You Do More Than One?
Quick answer: Physically possible to do two in one day, but we don’t recommend it. Three hours of bridges and forest walking is genuinely tiring at altitude. Doing two operators back-to-back leads to the second experience feeling repetitive. Choose the operator that best fits your traveler type and invest your energy in doing it well.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which hanging bridges operator is best for families?
Selvatura is the best choice for families with children. The trail is well graded and accessible for kids from about 6 years old. The butterfly garden and insect exhibits add educational value that engages younger travelers. The hummingbird garden is particularly good for children who respond to up-close animal encounters. Sky Walk is better for older children and teenagers who want the drama of a high bridge.
Are the hanging bridges scary?
They sway slightly when people walk across them, which some visitors find momentarily startling. Heights range from around 30 to 60 meters above the forest floor. People with significant fear of heights should consider whether bridges are right for them. The bridges are solidly constructed and extremely safe. Thousands of visitors cross them daily. Light swaying is normal and reduces significantly when you are not walking.
How long do the hanging bridges take?
Without a guide, the 3 km loops at Selvatura and Sky Walk take about 1.5 to 2 hours at a comfortable walking pace. Mistico’s 3.5 km trail takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. With a guide making wildlife stops and explanations, add 45 to 60 minutes to each estimate. Plan for a half morning minimum.
Is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve different from the hanging bridges?
Yes. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a separate protected area managed by the Centro Científico Tropical. Selvatura, Sky Walk, and Mistico are private commercial operations. The reserve has the most pristine primary forest and the tightest visitor controls. The hanging bridge operators offer better infrastructure, included trails, and in the case of Selvatura, additional attractions. Most visitors with 2 to 3 days in Monteverde visit both the reserve and at least one hanging bridge operator.
